This course covers everything you need to set up and run a highly available, multi-master cluster using MariaDB Cluster. We’ll train you in the basics of MariaDB Cluster architecture and functionality, as well as more advanced techniques for configuring and administering a MariaDB Cluster.


  • Completion of the MariaDB Standard DBA course or relevant working experience as a MariaDB database administrator
  • Working knowledge of database concepts
  • Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux command prompt usage
  • Basic knowledge of computer networking


  • Linux administration skills
  • MariaDB server configuration and usage experience
  • Familiarity with AWS VMs
  • Familiarity with VirtualBox


This is a 2-day course. Each day is a 6.5-hour session that includes instructor-led training, followed by hands-on exercises. We will take a 30 minute lunch/coffee break at 12:30.

Students will learn a wide range of skills for administering MariaDB Cluster, including the following:

  • Understand concepts such as cluster replication
  • Describe common cluster topologies
  • Explain the architecture of MariaDB Cluster
  • Install and configure a basic MariaDB Cluster
  • Plan and perform an upgrade of MariaDB Cluster
  • Understand how to migrate standalone or replication topologies to MariaDB Cluster
  • Perform backup and restore operations using MariaDB Backup
  • Secure MariaDB Cluster
  • Use key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and improve MariaDB Cluster performance
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot common MariaDB Cluster problems
  • Understand how to load balance MariaDB Cluster using MariaDB MaxScale
  • Know how to manage factors such as split brain, consistent reads, the AUTO_INCREMENT attribute, slow nodes, and parallel replication
  • Use best practices to perform schema upgrades
  • Explain how state snapshot transfers (SSTs) and incremental state transfers (ISTs) work in MariaDB Cluster
  • Describe the features of geo-replication
  • Set up advanced features such as MariaDB Cluster Notifications and Arbitrator
  • Explain how and when to use other advanced features, such as multicasting, multiple clusters, and WAN replication
